ABINGTON SQUARE

The other fascinating things were the Northampton Cold Storage, next to the Savoy cinema. We called it the Ice House.

I've no doubt in older days it supplied great blocks of ice by horse and cart to businesses in the town, but for me the the structure of tubes on legs,

visible from beyond the gates, must have been what refrigeration engineers call the evaporator or the condenser. All I can remember is how big it was.

The other thing I remember is a furniture shop window opposite. It was the strangest I've ever seen. The glass was curved inwards, concave.

In fact it appeared as though there was no glass at all. I've never seen another like it since. Very high class though.
