John Short remembers, "The Fort Street house had got a built on kitchen.
I think that made a bit of difference. Kitchen was very small. We had a black
gas stove and
an old iron mangle and we had a copper up the corner which was heated by the
fire underneath.
It had a chimney going up out of the kitchen. That was for the weekly wash.
I used to have a friend that lived at the top of the street and in his house, in
the living room, it was
crammed full. They'd got two sisters and two brothers and a mother and father.
They lived in a two
bedroomed houseand in the living room there was a piano and a sofa, a table and
six chairs! And I can tell
you it was a job to walk around the table! It could only be about 8 foot by 10,
something like that."
