SUSPECTED GERMAN SPY IN NORTHAMPTON - Aug 22, 1914
An incident of a particularly suspicious character has been discovered in Northampton. A young
unnaturalised German who lived on the Kettering Road and mixed freely in many local circles,
walked into one of the Northampton Banks when the war clouds were gathering and asked for change
in German gold. As he could not be supplied he took English change and disappeared from the town.
It is believed he hurried back to Germany. When the authorities received orders to register all
Germans resident in the district, they visited his house and found to their surprise a wireless apparatus
fixed on the roof. He had erected this without obtaining a licence for it and apparently had been
using it for some time. The facilities he thus exploited for getting information he had no right are
obvious.
