WORLD WAR ONE NORTHAMPTON INDEPENDENT SOLDIER NEWSPAPER ARTICLES

PTE G. BAZELEY of the Seaforth Highlanders, Dec 1914

“I was 19 the other day, you know.  Had a birthday party in the trenches and had all the boys to tea,

which consisted of bread and butter, fried cheese, and bacon, jam and ‘spuds’ (pototoes), and bully.

It was a rare stomach tightener.  Pity we could not have a song about it, but the Germans would not approve

of it.  Talking about singing in the trenches, the Germans started a few nights ago, but they were soon stopped.

One of our shells smartened them up, but our gunners gave them some more for luck, and the mob on our

left caught them as they ran out.”
